SUMMER 2012 EXPOSE YOUR CHILD TO A FOREIGN LANGUAGE

Would you like to challenge your child academically?  Are you interested in helping your child learn how to learn?  Exposing your child to a foreign language early on will set him/her for later academic success in other disciplines.  I have written all of my children’s picture books to make it easier for parents to introduce a foreign language to their young children.  Feel free to read some of the articles I have written on the subject of foreign language acquisition:HERE  and HERE

If you decide to purchase my trilingual book : MARIE AND HER FRIEND THE SEA TURTLE

Here’s some activities that will help make reading the book more meaningful.

TO THE READER:
Did you know something mysterious happens as you read?
As you read this story written in English/French/Spanish you will encounter
many knew words.  Do the pre and post reading activities, these will help you understand and
learn some new French and Spanish words.

ACTIVITY ONE:   FINE ARTS TIE IN :   RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN ART AND TEXT IN PICTURE BOOKS/ PRE- READING-   Before reading the story look over the pictures on the following pages and see if you can guess what is going on.
Page 2- What is the girl doing?
Page 6- What is the girl staring at?
Page12- Why do you think the girl is pushing the turtle?
Page16- Can you guess why the girl is so surprised?
Page 20- What are the adults talking about?
Page 22- Why is the girl crying?
Page 26- Why do you suppose the girl is now smiling and happy?
Page 28- What are the adults doing with the turtle?
Now go back and read the story, compare your answers to what really happened in the story.

ACTIVITY TWO :   LANGUAGE ARTS TIE IN : IDENTIFYING WORDS  AND COMPARING MEANING OF  WORDS/ POST READING-   After you  are done reading the story, see if you can find the English meaning for the following Spanish words.
Muchacha, nombre,  mañana, tareas, isla, sol, brillar, Nuevo, tortuga, descubrimiento, mar, enorme, suavemente, noche, estómago, brazos, guisado, ojos, diamantes.   Now compare the Spanish meaning to the French.

ACTIVITY THREE:  GEOGRAPHY/ HISTORY:  LEARNING ABOUT PEOPLE FROM OTHER COUNTRIES/POST READING-
  1. What is the name of the first black republic?
  2. What year did that country become independent?
  3. Who is Toussaint L’Ouverture?
  4.  Where is Hispaniola located?
  5. Can you name the two countries that make up Hispanoila?
  6. Which part of Hispanoila speaks French and Creole?
  7.  Which part of Hispaniola speaks Spanish?
  8. What is the weather like? Is it hot or cold?

FRIENDSHIP FRIDAY-MAKE A WISH

My wish would be to end all the hunger in my native land of Haiti. I t breaks my heart that millions of dollars has been donated, yet the Haitian people are still poverty stricken.  Why are people still living in shacks?  My wish would be to built safe homes for the poor , schools for every school aged child  and to return Haiti's tourism back to a lucrative state.  I do not understand why  there is not an international intervention and outcry to what is happening in Haiti.  It is truly  a tragedy.  In the meantime, all that I can do is to continue to donate my book proceeds to help provide food and shelter for the needy.  After the 2010 earthquake, I wrote the poem below.  I want to thank Ramona for hosting Friendship Friday.  Check out her link here
Feel free to stop by and leave a comment.

        MY

My Haiti was once a beautiful place
now all is left is a people devastated
with more hunger and despair
I will pray for you, I will share my abundance with you
know that I love you, know that I will keep you in my heart always, know that the world will come to your aid
The world over heard your cries my beautiful Haiti, your despair will turn into hope, your tears will be wiped
away
do not give up, after the many deluges, the time has come for many colorful rainbows!

FRIENDSHIP FRIDAY

I am extremely blessed with my youngest son Luc.  He made the honor roll this semester. I am inspired to continue to love him unconditionally and to do what I am supposed to do as a parent.   I do not always like getting on his case about doing well in school, but I am thankful he is finally making wise decisions .    Here is a poem I wrote, hope you too will be inspired to love your child with the love of God and help him/her to be the best he/she can be.  Have a great week!

A mother's desire for her children.

Son, daughter I shall be to you
what the marrow is to your bones
I will nourish you with my love
for I wish you length of life.

son ,daughter till you are
twenty and one I will pray
to God that day by day your
steps may he guide.

son, daughter may in my absence
wisdom becomes your best friend
for common sense will keep
you out of harm's way

Son, daughter though sometimes
you will heed the advice of fools
I know you will indeed find ways to succeed

Son, daughter never, ever give up
for wherever life's journey
takes you, I will remain by your side
forever and ever

WORDLESS WEDNESDAY BLOG HOP

A picture of my daughter Michele.  She is beautiful on the inside which to me is more important than what one looks like on the outside.

INSPIRE ME MONDAY BLOG HOP

This week I am hugely inspired by God's eternal mercy upon my life.  I have a wonderful husband, three wonderful children and a great job.   I am inspired to keep God first always, because if it were not for him I would not  be here.  Thank you Lord for your mercy and grace.  I  was born in country where the majority of the people believe in vodoo. I am hugely blessed God called me out and spared my life .  I pray daily for my fellow  Haitians who do not worship the one true God.   Here's a poem  I wrote to honor my one true God:

THE FOUNTAIN OF LIFE
Today, Lord and Savior I come to drink from your fountain
my heart and soul are parched and all dried up
thank you Lord for letting me drink until I am full
no other drink will do, for I know with you I shall
thirst no more, how blessed I am that you have
granted me my wish
Oh! Dearest savior I do have one more request
I ask for you to keep close to your heart and thoughts
those who have not yet tasted of your divine water of life
I ask that they too can one day have the same desire to
come savor your fountain of life
for them , my Lord and Savior I pray
AMEN, AMEN, AMEN

FRIENDSHIP FRIDAY

Last Monday I came across a wonderful blog, today I joined the Friendship Friday blog hop.  The question of the week:  How did you come up with your blog's name?  I named my three blogs so bloggers would know what the blogs are about.  I am an author of four published books, it makes sense for me to use the name of each book as the title of the blogs.   Here are the names of my three blogs:  My Sister Is My Best Friend, Marie and Her Friend the Sea Turtle and  Remembering Nine Eleven.  Join me in making new friends!

INSPIRE ME MONDAY BLOG HOP

I just came across this wonderful blog hop.  I love the theme of inspire me.  Today, I am inspired by the fact that my book:  My Birthday Is September Eleven and Other Short Stories  is still on  Amazon's best-selling list. My goal is to help inspire teens and their parents about not letting tragedy define who they become.  Life is too short to let tragedy define you for the rest of your life.  I am hugely inspired  to write more books that will help give hope. I believe this is my calling in life and I am very thankful.

Children’s Ezine Guardian Angel Kids: Siblings – January 2012 Issue
The beginning of a new year usually brings a time of reflection on the year gone by and hopes of the new year filled with health, happiness, and success. As I get older, I conduct a mental housecleaning of simplifying my life and taking a concerted effort to enjoy the moment of the current day, instead of worrying about the "what if's", because often times the "what's if's" don't even come into play. It takes time to break the "what if" habit, try it today and focus in on your tasks of the day instead of obsessing about tomorrow. I know for myself I find myself not as drained if I focus on the here and now, instead of what I think the coming days, weeks, and months should be.
Our January 2012 theme for the month is all about siblings. Come along and reminisce about your childhood through the delightful poetry and stories in this month's issue and don't forget to share your memories with your children.
